Explore the Beekman Farm & Beyond

Just 60 minutes west of Albany along Route 20 lies a fall excursion with breathtaking views at every turn. The charming towns have businesses that are destinations within themselves. There is potential around every corner with each visitor turned resident. Our curiosity peaked, so we packed our lunches and water bottles to venture west!

The historic village of Sharon Springs once attracted visitors for the healing spring waters, now they come for the goats, neighbors, and apothecary products by Beekman 1802. This fall, the team at Beekman 1802 is hosting multiple Capture the Beauty events, where guests are invited to enjoy their picturesque 60-acre estate to explore, photograph, and paint en plein air. The farm has open green space, views of the hills, and a huge red barn filled with their famous (and friendly) goats. This is the perfect opportunity to safely explore, get inspired, and gain a fresh perspective (along with some fresh air).

**On Thursday, October 15th, Beekman 1802 and B&H Photo invite photographers, creators, and nature lovers alike to Beekman Farm. Professional photographer Jessica Olm and B&H experts will lead an educational photo walk for each session, sharing what inspires them and how to capture your best shot.

Hop over to Beekman 1802’s website to register!

Here are a few places to check out before/after Capture the Beauty:

Sharon Springs:

Keep in mind, not many places in Sharon Springs are open before 10 am, but we found the sweetest spot! The perfect morning pick-me-up sits in an unassuming building. The scents of cinnamon and sugar will guide you to Brimstone Bakery (922 Chestnut Street). The walk-up window has THE friendliest staff, delicious coffee, and options for sweet and savory preferences. We recommend trying one of their scones, a slice of quiche, their famous sticky buns, and the best coffee in all of Schoharie County! You can also check out the Black Cat Cafe for breakfast or lunch, just make sure they’re open!

After the workshop, stroll down Main Street in Sharon Springs, not only is there the Beekman 1802 Mercantile, but there are a handful of other quaint shops to check out. We recommend popping into Botanie Floral + Gift to pick up a fresh arrangement, Cobbler & Co., An American Emporium, and Sharon Sprigs

For an afternoon snack or sweet treat head over to Dairyland, which will give you all of the retro nostalgia feels. Order a soft-serve Crowley milk ice cream cone topped with sprinkles and some fried pickles - you won’t be disappointed. Beware, the servings are large!

For dinner, make sure to stop at 204 Main, as seen in Travel + Leisure. It’s a modern restaurant serving fresh, locally-sourced food in historic Sharon Springs.

Canajoharie:

Just 10 minutes north of Sharon Springs is Canajoharie, a former mill town along the NYS Thruway. Home to beautiful parks, the historic dummy light, and the infamous Arkell Museum, it attracts visitors from near and far. The area’s revitalization is evident and culture brimming with opportunity.

If you’re in the mood to explore, check out Wintergreen Park where you can see waterfalls, space to picnic, and restrooms.

Stop by Lee’s Shops at Wagner Square which is supposedly the most talked-about gift shop in Central New York! You’ll be sure to find the perfect gift for anyone.

Cherry Valley:

Head west of Sharon Springs to Cherry Valley to add to the unique stops throughout your day. The  Cherry Valley Bookstore boasts stories as colorful as its history. This tiny building in historic Cherry Valley is perfect for book lovers and treasure hunters alike. The new owners are a delight and offer a wealth of information on the history of the building, town, and vast book collection.

If you’re in the mood for a beer, check out Red Shed Brewery located at 817 Butterbown Road. They produce small-batch brews available only locally! Their original location in Cherry Valley may be hard to find, but once you are there, you will understand why it was worth the trip! The original Red Shed Taproom & Brewery has an outdoor seating area with a view of the rolling hills. Their newer location in Cooperstown has 20 taps, a large beer garden, and is perfect for larger parties.

Don’t miss making a pit-stop at The Tepee. This vintage roadside treasure is a "must stop" whether you're on a day trip along Route 20 or on a vacation in the area. Stopping at the iconic structure is sure to be a surprising experience.

The Tepee is known for its breathtaking panoramic view of The Mohawk Valley, reaching 90 miles north to the distant Adirondack Mountains. It’s incredible!

While you’re there, make sure to visit the Tepee Chow Wagon* (located at The Tepee). Serving their famous chili dogs, the Tepee Chow Wagon is not your typical hotdog stand!

*Not currently open due to COVID-19.

Cooperstown:

Thirty minutes west of Sharon Springs is Cooperstown, NY. Named after the infamous, James Fenimore Cooper- author of The Last of the Mohicans; Cooperstown isn’t just for baseball fanatics - it’s historic, art centric, inspiring, and beautiful. Check out our previous blog on what to do and see there!

*If you’re visiting in the summer, Little Ann's Flowers in Ames, NY is a must! Purchase fresh-cut, homegrown flowers from the sweetest Bloom Buggy along Route 10. Just note the hours and availability can change swiftly with Mother Nature's mood; be sure to check out her Instagram for updates.
